I've been through a lot of troubles in this last two years...
I've lost someone very important to me... but now I'm here again with my instruments and my music.
Thank you very much to all my Youtube fans who waited patiently for my return.
Gattobus is back in his little studio, finally.
If you've read this blog for any length of time, you're probably aware that I am a big proponent of using effects as part of the sound design process. Today's free sample selection is a perfect example of that ethos. This sound started life as a simple plucked squarewave sound from Arturia's Jupiter-8V. But after feeding it through Ohmicide, Logic's Space Designer, and D16's Toraverb, it takes on the character of a struck metal pole. 6 samples @ 24-bit/44.1k weigh in at 5.58 MB. Enjoy!
IAN BODDY is one of the UK´s most celebrated synthesists and sound designer and has been creating award-winning sample libraries since 1992. In this enormous compendium Zero-G has collated his last EIGHT sound libraries into one stupendously large library of sublime sound design which has been made available in all the most popular audio formats.
This collecion is packed full of ambiences, soundscapes, drones, loops, single hits and FX and is the perfect tool for any professional movie soundtrack or dance producer looking for some extra creativity and imagination.
Here Ian Boddy tells us about his background, the libraries in this collection and how the sounds were created.
Midge Ure became famous with Ultravox ("Vienna", "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes") and as a solo singer ("If I Was"), but he has also worked as a producer and songwriter for artists such as Thin Lizzy, Visage and of course Band Aid. In this video, he talks about the reunion of Ultravox, their first album in 26 years, and the use of the Melodyne software in his work.

Vince Clarke is a man synonymous with synth pop and a legend in the history of electronic music. Hes famous for founding three of the most popular and lasting musical acts in history: Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure. But his distinct sonic output depends upon another feat: he has spent the last 30 years amassing one of the worlds most impressive collections of rare, holy grail analogue synthesizers.
Run anything through your Moogerfoogers (even Kalimbas!) to create more dynamic soundscapes. In this video, a sample and hold waveform from the Multi-Pedal modulates the oscillator frequency of the Ring Mod while it creates aural cascades by controlling the feedback of the Analog Delay.

Charles Rehill and I have been friends for over a decade now. I met him right as he was starting his project Lost Signal, and indeed he asked me to produce his debut album. Many years later, I signed Charles to my 23db Records label and have been releasing his music ever since.
Earlier this year, Charles and his lovely wife Kristine welcomed their first child into the world. Although he was born healthy, he arrived a bit earlier than anticipated and required special care. Despite the fact that the Rehill's had been paying nearly $1,000 a month for health coverage, their insurance company denied the claim for their son's special care leaving them stuck with a bill for over $225,000. That's right. They HAVE insurance and are now stuck with nearly a quarter million dollar bill. Needless to say, this has put the new family in a pretty precarious condition.
I know that the economy is tough right now and that many of us are struggling to get by as it is, but if you are able to help in any way, you'd be lightening their load significantly. How can you help? There's a couple ways:
1.) Kristine has started a Chipin page to accept donations and share their story. It doesn't matter how small your donation is... even a buck helps. This is the fastest and most immediate way you can help.
2.) All this summer, if you order a copy of Charles' "Eviscerate" CD through the Assemblage 23 Online Store, I will waive the shipping cost of your entire order, no matter how big it is and no matter where you live. Note that when you receive your initial order confirmation that it will list a shipping fee, but this will be removed before your items ship.
3.) Head over to Lost Signal's Bandcamp page and purchase any of Charles's excellent releases. Been looking for an excuse to pick up the new "Apparition" CD? Now you can do it and know it's going to a good cause as well.
NOTE: Although the donation site indicates that they are only accepting donations until May 18th, that's actually May 18th 2012.
Laundronium by Tonehammer Tonehammer has introducedLaundronium, a virtual instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt based on sounds sampled from a washing machine:
The idea of the washing machine as a piece of musical equipment, while not unheard of, has been fairly limited in its scope. Generally you’ll see the white cube playing a rudimentary spin cycle beat behind a mediocre guitarist who is only vaguely aware of the naturally occurring music which is constantly present in our modern human environment. The washing machine will play this beat dutifully, knowing that it isn’t respected for musical talent like its ancestor the washboard.
We spend so much less time with the modern washing machine, than the folks of previous generations did with the washboard, that we’ve become coldly detached from it. The washing machine happily does all the work, never complaining, and still we complain about laundry day. If we just took a little time to talk to our washing machines we may find out that they are quite into music. And not just Zydeco, either. As it happens, the washing machine is as far beyond the washboard in musical capabilities as it is in laundering talent.
Tonehammer has built a reputation for creating unique virtual instruments, and Laundronium is no exception.
Give the demo and walk-through audio files a listen and let us know what you think of Laundronium! Features:
47 kontakt .nki files (open format).
1045 samples.
1.22 GB installed.
44.1 kHz stereo PCM wav format (24 bit).
Custom Convolution Reverb Impulses.
Bowed and Plucked, stringed articulations.
Finger and Mallet Tuned and Untuned Percussion Articulations.
Powerful Custom Performance, legato, FX, and arpeggiator controls.
Laundronium is $35, but is available through June 5th for US $29.

Renowned live performer Dub FX unlocks the creative potential of the new Loop Recorder in the Traktor 2 DJ software.
Using the live input on the Traktor Kontrol S4 DJ performance system, he records and overdubs his voice and uses the Sample Decks to arrange different loops while adding Traktor's exclusive effects like the Beatmasher or Delay.
Watch how renowned live performer Dub FX created his unique performance with the Traktor Kontrol S4 all-in-one DJ performance system using TRAKTOR 2 Technology Inside.
He records his voice using a microphone as the live input source in Traktor's Loop Recorder, overdubbing layer after layer to create an intricate vocal arrangement.
Using the filter knob on the S4, he brings in a drum loop on a Sample Deck and adds more layers to the performance. Note how he moves recorded material from the Loop Recorder to empty Sample Deck slots to free the Loop Recorder for further use.
Togu Audio Line has introduced TAL-Vocoder-2, a free vocoder plugin for Windows and Mac.
Here’s what they have to say about Vocoder 2:
TAL-Vocoder is a vintage vocoder emulation with 11 bands that emulates the sound of vocoders from the early 80’s. It includes analog modeled components in combination with digital algorithms such as the SFFT (Short-Time Fast Fourier Transform).
This vocoder does not make a direct convolution of the carrier and modulation signal as other digital vocoders maybe do. It includes an envelope follower for every of the eleven bands. This vocoder is optimized for voice processing and includes some algorithms for consonants to make the voice more intelligible.
The carrier signal is a VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) with a Pulse, Saw, Noise and SubOsc. But it’s also possible to use the left stereo input as carrier. This way every sound source can be used as carrier signal. This plug-in supports every sample rate.

In honor of Bob Moog's 77th Birthday, Moog engineer Steve Dunnington summons a Minimoog Voyager Orchestra to play a Mooged Out version of what else?...Happy Birthday!
Steve overdubbed 6 tracks of Minimoog Voyager, one voice at a time, to realize this rendition of Happy Birthday. Using sounds from the Voyager factory presets, this special version of Happy Birthday for Bob was envisioned as a stylistic mashup of Kraftwerk and Jean-Jacques Perry. Both are artists who helped put the Moog Synthesizer in the ear of listeners all over the world.
Happy Birthday, Bob! This year marks some big changes for the little company you started. None of it would be possible without your fearless genius, passion for innovation and overwhelming humility. Thanks for everything, Bob!
Station Q is like half an Oberkorn sequencer (see other videos for Oberkorn demonstrations). It is identical to Oberkorn, except that is is 8 step instead of 16, and does not have the MIDI features. The Station Q is the perfect companion to the Station X/Y mini-modular combo (featured in this video).
This basic video demonstrates making simple connections (gate to trigger), modulating the filter via Station Q's CV A row of steps, creating a basic sequence by step setting, as well as other items such as glide and patching the sequencer to Q's Reset function.
Per usual, at video's end, you'll hear everything brought together in an original, analogue demo tune.
Enjoy.

Maceo Parker came to visit the Moog factory in Asheville, NC last week and treated us to an impromptu improv in the Moog Sound Lab. While Maceo wailed away we couldn't resist filtering and modulating his sound through the Moogerfoogers. Beginning with the natural sound of Maceo's Fresh N' Funky Alto Sax, we quickly hurdle into another dimension by adding the MF-101 Low Pass Filter to the mix. Crankin' on the Cutoff knob of the MF-101 Low Pass Filter draws out an analog "Wah" that allows for additional sonic articulations -- say, "Wah-wah What?!?" It is recommended to keep the Resonance & Mix on the high side to bring out the most color when using this charismatic extension of your horn's voice. The MF-102 Ring Modulator, and MF-103 12-Stage Phaser are being used here to add anywhere from subtle tremolo effects, to mild grit to the tones being passed from the MF-101 Low Pass Filter, and MF-104Z Analog Delay. The root of all Space-Funk is in our MF-104Z Analog Delay -- setting the Delay Time knob to a desirable tempo/pulse, and the Feedback knob to the desirable echo length, gives Maceo an analog canvas to work with that he can both apply color to, and take color from -- watch as he pauses to explore his audio imprint, then snatches it back to shape again. Rocking on the Delay Time switch, and tweaking the Delay Time knob at the end of Maceo's phrases twists his sound to an otherworldly degree, creating a stunning sonic vertigo. Where will our Moogerfoogers take your horn?
Nintendo Entertainment System is the sound source for this cartoon for New York based AfroDJMac's "Yea Yea Yea." This animation was created for the Nintendo EP, an album made up of songs created with an NES.

Celemony, creators of the ground-breaking Melodyne pitch-correction software have announced their newest product: Capstan, a tool aimed at correcting timing/playback speed issues introduced by faulty tapes or playback. Here's what they have to say:
"Being musically intelligent, the Capstan algorithm is capable of recognizing not only the minutest amounts of wow and flutter but also continuous speed variations within the musical material itself and makes possible detailed editing that extends even to drawing in the curve manually. It is based on the patented DNA Direct Note Access technology made famous by the award-winning program Melodyne, which is used worldwide in all major studios for the editing of pitch and timing.
Whilst the precise detection of the wow and flutter represents the actual technological revolution, repairing the recording is easy: the musical material is simply played back with the velocity curve inverted. Pure varispeed – guaranteed free from artifacts.

The Short Circuit Presents Mute showcase of synthpop and electronic music wrapped up last night in London with a Vince Clarke extravaganza, which included a set with Erasure, an appearance by Alison Moyet for what might have been Yazoo’s final performance and a surprise reunion with Feargal Sharkey to play the lone single the duo recorded as The Assembly. In addition to Clarke, the two-night Mute Records event at London’s Roundhouse featured three more current and former Depeche Mode members, as Martin L. Gore and Andy Fletcher performed DJ sets and Alan Wilder played as Recoil. Despite fans’ hopes, singer Dave Gahan did not appear for an impromptu DM set.
Other acts on the bill: Nitzer Ebb (who joined Recoil for DM’s “Personal Jesus”), Laibach (who covered the classic “Warm Leatherette”), Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman), Moby, label founder Daniel Miller,Liars and The Residents.
Last night’s 11-song Erasure set was immediately preceded by three songs from Yazoo (”Nobody’s Diary,” “Ode to Boy,” “Don’t Go”), a performance Moyet had announced likely will be the duo’s last. The real surprise, though, came after Erasure, when Andy Bell introduced Sharkey, the former Undertones singer who stopped recording in the early 1990s and moved to the business side of music.
Taking the stage last night, Sharkey said, “It’s 20 years since I stood in front of a crowd like you guys, and the only reason I’d ever have done it was for this man standing over here,” he added, pointing to Clarke. The two performed “Never Never,” their 1983 U.K. hit single.
You can see video of that Assembly reunion above, and, below, we’re gathering other clips, including performances by Yazoo, Erasure, Laibach, Recoil and Nitzer Ebb, and more as they show up on YouTube. See more video from Short Circuit Presents Mute after the jump…

Livid Instruments has announced that all Livid Block MIDI controllers now come with expansion connectors, making it easy to customize your MIDI control setup:
Two ¼” jacks allow you to connect Roland-style foot pedals and single analog controls. Put your feet in the mix for additional controls, or experiment adding different sensors and switches.
If that’s not enough, you can add up to eight more analog controls with the pin header connection. This provides a direct link into the block’s Brain so you can experiment with touch controls, sensors, accelerometers, faders, rotary knobs, and more. Of course, our Builder series BYOB boards can be easily integrated for a totally customized and modular setup.
This is a interesting enhancement. It mainstreams customization, making it easy to create your own hot-rod MIDI controller solution.

Don't expect this to hit the shelves anytime soon, the thyratrons alone cost $20-30 each, and unlike most other Metasonix tubes, are growing scarcer by the year.
Even the most casual of Hip Hop listeners should be aware of Ski Beatz as, at the very least, the producer of iconic Hip Hop anthems on Jay-Z's 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, and several albums for Camp Lo, having also gone on to produce for Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Fat Joe and others.
15 years on and the digitally inclined will have caught last year's excitable wave of activity leading up to the release of the North Carolina hailing producer, DJ and former emcee's own album, 24 Hour Karate School, released in September 2010, which saw Ski working with a mouthwatering spread of Hip Hop talent established and new, including Curren$y, Smoke DZA, Jean Grae, Jim Jones, Jay Electronica, Joell Ortiz, The Cool Kids, Stalley, Tabi Bonney, Ras Kass, Camp Lo and Wiz Khalifa.
On a mission to find out more about the man behind the beatz, SoulCulture TV sat down with Ski Beatz at Damon Dash's creative base of operations in New York, DD172, and asked the producer about his beginnings in Hip Hop -- as a rapper first.
Watch below as Ski talks us through his journey from the mic to the boards, from getting jaded by the industry and moving home to North Carolina to more recently returning to New York to work with a new breed of emcees and how his initial passion for rapping gives him the edge when producing for top rappers.

Developer Jarek Lupinski is working on a new NES cartridge, Chip Maestro, that turns a Nintendo Entertainment System into a MIDI synthesizer.
Here’s what he has to say about Chip Maestro:
The cartridge will accept a MIDI input from any instrument, and by passing the MIDI notes through the NES, the cartridge will make the NES synthesize 8-bits of awesome in true NES squarewavey goodness. See the video for more details!
Most chiptune artists today use ‘software synths’ to try and recreate the sound we grew to love. By providing artists with a low-cost and easy to use hardware solution, they can use a real NES to compose their music, and even play it live on stage! And if you don’t have a MIDI instrument, don’t worry; you can use your PC with an inexpensive USB-MIDI converter, or create your own instrument using Arduinos or other microcontrollers that can output MIDI, so you can turn anything into an 8-bit instrument!
Antares has announced ATG-6, aka Auto-Tune for your guitar.
Here’s what they have to say about it?
In the years since its introduction, Antares Auto-Tune has literally revolutionized the process of vocal production.
Now, with our new ATG-6™ guitar technology, we’re doing the same for guitar.
ATG-6 is a DSP-based suite of functions that offer everything you’ve always wanted from a guitar, along with capabilities you never imagined possible. From flawless intonation to astonishing tonal flexibility to alternate tunings that open up entirely new areas of inspiration and creativity, ATG-6 technology seriously expands the flexibility and range of the electric guitar while letting you continue to play your own way.
Using our new Solid-Tune Intonation system, an ATG-6 equipped guitar constantly monitors the precise pitch of each individual string and makes any corrections necessary to ensure that every note of every chord and riff is always in tune, regardless of variables like finger position or pressure or physical limitations of the instrument. As a result, listening to a guitar with Solid-Tune is a revelation, offering a purity of intonation that has simply never before been possible.
ATG-6 – Six Times The Auto-Tune Pain?
At this point, Auto-Tune for Guitar is just an announcement, Antares hasn’t released audio or video demos.
And our gut-level reaction is that ATG-6 could be six times as annoying as Auto-Tune for vocals.
But Auto-Tune for guitars also promises new tuning options, and potential as a creative tool for guitars and possibly other audio sources.
What do you think of the Antares ATG-6 announcement? Are you ready for Auto-Tune for Guitars?

Soundtorch lets you browse through your audio collection extremely fast. Just drag your audio files onto the Soundtorch view ― all sounds are immediately arranged in a meaningful way and ready to be auditioned. Soundtorch is driven by the C.A.S.E. (Computer Aided Sound Exploration) engine, a sophisticated suite of algorithms that analyze and intelligently classify your audio collection.
With Soundtorch you can listen to sounds using a virtual torchlight ― all sounds illuminated by the light are played back simultaneously. This allows you to get an overview of literally thousands of sound files in a matter of mere minutes. As you zoom in or focus the light beam, you can still listen to one sound at a time.
Even though Soundtorch plays so many sounds at once, there's no cacophony. Your mind is powerful enough to easily spot the sound you like. Soundtorch further positions each playing sound on a surround system, or uses advanced surround virtualization when listening with headphones.
Our panel at SF MusicTech Summit 2011. Sadly these are only the first 34 minutes since my SD card was full after that.
We ~ Roger Linn, Ed Goldfarb and Geert Bevin ~ presented the LinnStrument, the Continuum and the Eigenharp. We demonstrated that we're now at a tipping point where electronic musical instruments are every bit as expressive as traditional instruments.
After that we go into an interesting discussion and debate about the subject with audience Q&A.
