Su-Preme MPA - Sample based music production app

"Su-Preme MPA is a sample-based music production app.
We call it THE OFFICIAL HIP-HOP APP!

MPA was co-designed by A. Supreme Wilder, one of the Wu-Tang Clan/Sunz of Man producers who is now a well-known music production mentor.

The app closely imitates a legendary device used by urban music producers. It has the following features:
- 12 low-latency pads for drum/one-shot sounds
- A piano keyboard (the number of keys depends on your screen size)
- A basic sample editor that allows you to cut your MP3s and WAVs
- Ability to record tracks with 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 quantization and swing
- True analog UI and classic design

This Beta is limited in its functionality. Please read the intro notes that are shown on the first launch.

MPA needs a reasonably powerful phone, although it works just fine on Droid Original.

We are looking for your feedback on this beta. Please contact us at boombappz@yahoo.com or at boombappz.com

We hope that Su-Preme MPA inspires you to make your greatest beats!"

Note this app is for the Android OS, not the iPhone.

Give Ableton Live its Missing LFO: Max for Live Device Modulates Everything

The LFO everything max for live device (v1.5) from Julien Bayle on Vimeo.

Ableton Live users have wanted an LFO for a long time. Using basic wave shapes, you’d be able to modulate anything in a set, from clip parameters to instruments and effects, producing shifting timbres or rhythmic patterns or anything you’d like.
Julien Bayle, the Marseilles-based (certified) Live guru, ambient musician (as protofuse), and builder of the protodeck controller, has built a solution. “LFO Everything in Live” is a Max for Live device that allows you to control any parameter anywhere in Live using LFO waveforms. Features:
  • Tempo sync toggle
  • Multiple waveshapes – new ones added this version – or draw your own.
  • Route an LFO to another LFO to another LFO, etc., for some sophisticated signal chains.
  • Lifetime free updates.

You’ll need a recent version of Live – 8.2.1 required – plus a copy of Max for Live. But if you’ve got those two things, prepare for some serious LFO goodness.
The tool is normally EUR8, but anticipating some interest from CDM readers, you can get it for EUR6 and go buy yourself an espresso (or two) instead. Use coupon code CR3AT3 (first fifteen buyers only – you might ask nicely to extend that)!
http://designthemedia.com/products/abletonlive/
Follow Protofuse/Julien on Twitter, Facebook, and if you have opinions about what kind of hardware he should be building, take his survey
I’d still like to see an LFO as a default device, and for Max for Live devices to be easier to distribute to users who don’t own a copy – as well as for more M4L patchers to use a GPL license for patches they’re selling. But this looks like a terrific solution, nonetheless, and could really change the feeling of working with Live. Great work, Julien!

TRON LEGACY – Sound Panel

“TRON LEGACY” – Sound Panel from Michael Coleman on Vimeo.

Making the exception on this one as specific gear for the most part isn't discussed. This one is more about sound design, processing and use of plug-ins. Starts with the light cycles and use of filter, resonance and pitch sweeps. Avid's reNOVAtor gets a mention about 20 minutes in for cleaning up audio. Avid of course is the company behind the new M-Audio Venom. Vocal processing and effects come in around 31 minutes but no mention of what was used.

"Explore the sound and music of "TRON LEGACY", the long awaited sequel continuing the adventures through the world inside your computer.

The sound team behind the film will take you behind-the-scenes of the science fiction epic, presenting special excerpts from the movie. Watch how the sound team approached various elements of the mix and edit while they tell you the stories behind them.

Guiding you through their digital realms will be Supervising Sound Editor Gwen Whittle, Sound Designer Steve Boeddeker, Music Supervisor Jason Bentley, Re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo, and Film Editor James Haygood, ACE.

Filmed on January 12, 2011 at the Walt Disney Studios, Burbank, CA.

VIDER TASTER OF M-AUDIO VENOM SYNTH

First Look Review of M-Audio Venom Synth from AIR Users Blog on Vimeo.

An initial first look taster review of the M-Audio Venom synth.
Russ shows you some of the reasons why he has written such a glowing review on the AIR Users Blog.

M-AUDIO VENOM REVIEW 12-VOIVE VIRTUAL ANALOGUE SYNTH-WORLD'S FIRST REVIEW

You can tell from my recent video and also by reading our Twitter feed that I'm an old cynic; NAMM 2011 was wall-to-wall hype, it felt like silly season. So from the outset I'm going to avoid using the term 'game-changer' or any other meaningless phrase in any part of this review.

Secondly, bearing that in mind, this will now make writing this M-Audio Venom review extremely difficult, let me explain why. I'm old enough to have been there to try the Yamaha DX7, Roland D50, Korg M1 and Ensoniq Mirage, all synths that when I played them for the first time I thought 'wow!' - they so impacted me that I had to have them, and I did! So writing this article without coming out with hype and silliness is going to damned near impossible because the Venom has done it to me again. That doesn't happen very often now I'm an old hack, but the M-Audio Venom has hooked me.

In the next days and weeks I'll be posting videos to show you the Venom in action with in-depth tutorials, in the mean-time these are my first impressions of the M-Audio Venom.

I'm not sure if it's by design or accident, but the genius of Venom is that you can get instant gratification out of the box, or if you wish, you can be exploring so deeply that you need oxygen. I had it out of the box and for the next two hours just played with the presets, one of them for 40 minutes using just two fingers! On the other hand I then spent about an hour exploring the editing capabilities, the on-screen editor just works and makes editing a dream.

In More Detail

Enough of my gushing (so much it makes it sound like I'm on Avid's pay-roll), let's get down to basic.

The M-Audio Venom arrives in a fully printed box, just so you're sure what's in there. In the box is the synth, a PSU with an assortment of world-wide converters (helpful) and a DVD containing the Venom installer and the Vyzex editor software installer. You need to install these first and then re-boot your computer, it takes a couple of minutes. You don't need to install these for the Venom synth to work, but it helps when you want to edit.

I already have the Axiom Pro, but the Venom build quality seems even better, with it's futuristic styling and green LCD display. This is not to suggest the Axiom Pro is poorly built, but putting them side-by-side it perhaps reflects manufacturing advancements over the last couple of years.

I could go into detail about connections and knobs, but you can find all this out by downloading the manual from the M-Audio site. So on to the goodies.

What does it do?

At base level the Venom is a virtual analogue synth, giving the user some of the fattest (or should I say Phattest) sounds out there be that; bass, lead, arp, poly and pad. It's called a virtual analogue synth because the raw waveforms it uses to create the sounds via its 3 oscillators are samples of vintage synths - from there on out you can manipulate to your heart's content.

It features both single and multi-mode which enables the user to create both complex sounds and also complex patterns, generated by the in-built arp. It can generate drums and play those as patterns and up to four parts can be combined to make either cool grooves or complex rhythms.

You can feed audio into it and then route that audio through the filters and effects to mash up the sound, but you can also use the synth as an audio interface for your DAW with mic, instrument and stereo aux input. Of course you can also use it as the audio hub to your on-stage rig if you only have 2 or 3 synths.

As I have already said it also comes with the FREE Vyzex editor for Mac and PC, little did I know that when hooked up it works in live mode, in other words as you edit the synth the on-screen editor updates and vice-versa - a very nice touch. So if you are using the Venom with your DAW you can almost use it like a plug-in and you don't need to go near the Venom to control any of it.

The Sounds

The M-Audio Venom comes with 4 banks of 128 sounds in single mode and 2 banks of 128 multi patches from factory. The sounds then have insert and master effects ranging from compressor, bit reducer and distortion affecting gain to delays, flanger and reverb effects.

You can tell there's been a significant investment in sound design because out of the box the Venom sounds brilliant, with diverse sounds perfect for every kind of style including dance, drum-n-bass, Hip Hop and then all the way through to vintage classics that take me back to Stevie Windwood and George Duke tracks.

Perhaps this is why the M-Audio Venom has done to me what the DX7, D50, M1 and Mirage did to me, it has such awesome sounds. When push comes to shove the test of any great synth is how good does it sound, for most of us who don't want to spend hours programming, that means how good does it sound out of the box? Simply put, amazing.

Conclusion

For the men reading this, let me try and use a few analogies, ladies please forgive me for any offence.

If the Venom was a woman then it would be Jenna Jameson . This synth is no lady, it's a filthy, beautiful thing that every man on the planet is going to want to spend a lot of time alone with. (warning - if you need to Google her, then make sure you have safe-search switched on)

If the Venom was a car then it would be the Bugatti Veyron, with that dirty sounding engine, sleek looks and giving you the ride of your life.

If the Venom was a food then it would be a huge Donar Kebab after 10 pints, with lots of hot chilli sauce, but no salad, there's certainly no padding here, it's 110% meat!

For the women reading this then they've turned Jason Bourne into a synth; it's dangerous, sexy and unforgettable.

There's no need for any of the changing games rubbish, if you want to play games then buy a PS3, this is for those who want to make some serious edgy music that gets people's attention - it's got more attitude than a 14 year old hoodie after two bottles of cider. If you are looking for subtle then give the Venom a miss, this is anything but that.

So the million dollar question is should you buy it? Well if you make Bavarian Drinking Music or Celtic Folk then perhaps not. If however you make any kind of beat or synth based music I suggest you get one as soon as possible from your dealer, my guess is the chance of a second hand Venom appearing on the market any time soon, is about a likely as me giving birth.

Thankfully I don't need to, the Venom is my new baby and I'm smitten.

BOMBsessions: Xeno & Oaklander

BOMBsessions: Xeno & Oaklander
By Clinton Krute

The music of the Brooklyn-based group Xeno & Oaklander seems to come from an earlier time, when the beeps and whirs of the analog synthesizer began to creep up from the underground into the mainstream of pop music (or drag it down to the depths, if you prefer). The late 70s and early 80s synth music from which their work draws was a reaction to the sense of the alienation brought about by living in world that was becoming more and more digital. Sean McBride and Liz Wendlbo, the duo behind the project, still find these sounds relevant today, in both theme and means. Xeno & Oaklander excavate a forgotten music, re-imagining its forms for the present with a defiant and romantic nostalgia. Their debut album Sentinelle, out now on Wierd records, is a testament to their skill at shaping electricity and is overflowing with icy drones, oscillating tones, and excellent (and danceable) songwriting.

After an epic performance of Preuss (a title taken from the particularly noisy auto body shop adjacent to their studio), McBride and Wendelbo sat down with BOMBsessions in their Williamsburg synth museum, to discuss the poetics of their songwriting, the relation of their vocal lines to Derridas Glas, and moving contemporary music forward by digging into the past. Catch Xeno & Oaklander on March 5th at the Cameo in Brooklyn before they leave for a European tour.

Jan 14 2011 Arc, A New Design from monome Creator: After Grids, Encoders

You’ve just created the design that, more than any other, was the signature of electronic music making in the first decade of the 21st Century. What’s your second act?

Having made the monome grid controllers the biggest design hit in music creation in the last few years, then moved to a farm in upstate New York to do some … farming (really), monome’s Brian Crabtree now and Kelli Cain have made public what’s next. Think really big knobs.

The design makes some sense to me, intuitively, already. Livid tried the obvious solution of combining encoders with arrays in its Code, but having a big cluster of encoders, while interesting, seems that it’d have limited applications. It works for Livid, but given the widespread impact of the monome, you’d expect something more generalized, more universal.

Arc could be that. They’re large, “ultra-high resolution” encoders. The monome sacrificed sensitivity for quantity with an array of on/off toggles; Arc does the reverse. The idea is presumably that you’ll really care about these big knobs. Two- and four-knob versions are promised; the four-knob variant seems like it might have the greatest appeal, depending on the price difference. The visual feedback on the side are “high-density LED rings,” but they also have “variable brightness,” meaning that they could be more visually compelling than is apparent in still photos.

In addition to being knobs, each knob is a push-button. Unlike the monome, it’s hard to see this being the only controller you’d use. It is easy to imagine it used in conjunction with another controller, though, monome or otherwise. I’m imagine that as on the monome, you’ll be able to modify the design to add tilt sensors and the like.

Like the monome before it, the arc makes no sound. It requires computer software and the OSC (OpenSoundControl) protocol in order to control software, connected through a USB port. And so like the monome, you can expect that a lot of its value will be software inspired by the quality of the design and even the high-value construction of the item. If it’s like its predecessor, the arc will be an attractive window through which clever software designers imagine new musical contraptions.

The obvious comparison here is to the humble, US$45 Griffin PowerMate, a single metal control knob that used USB. This promises to have more precise visual feedback and be a whole lot better made and open; on the other hand, anyone who was fond of the PowerMate in theory may be quicker to buy into the notion here. (flight404 aka visual legend Robert Hodgin once did a whole live visual set with an array of PowerMates; he may prove ahead of his time if this catches on.)

Pricing, details, media due later, with “orders and shipping in February.” I can say it’s real; I saw some version on Brian’s workbench.

arc [monome]

I think, having passed on a trip to Anaheim, that readers might like to get hands-on coverage of the Arc, and a serious look at whether the monome’s sequel will live up to the original. Do you agree?

Side note: People I’m talking to are already wondering what you would do with, you know, two big wheels. I refer you to Etch-a-Sketch (two wheels), your car (one big, necessarily high-resolution wheel)… I was initially skeptical of how the monome would work as an instrument with no velocity sensitivity, and was eventually won over by a combination of ingenious software and musicianship by its fanbase. I wouldn’t write off the minimalism of this just yet.

Update: stretta already has an app in the works for the arc. He mentions that in a blog post with an adorable illustration that, aside from being clever, suggests how many people will use this app. See the video after the jump – notice the PowerMate controller in the corner of the video? It’s apparently standing in for an arc. Getting the picture?

Korg Revises Portable USB MIDI Controllers; What’s New in nanoSERIES 2?

Cheap, ultra-slim, and easy to pop in a backpack, Korg’s nano Series were a big hit. The only real blemish on this line has to be the original nanoKEY; some people managed to use it, but key caps chronically fell off and it wasn’t a whole lot of fun to play. The nanoPAD and nanoKONTROL fared much better, providing pads and faders in a laptop-ready form factor. And since they don’t require drivers, these will also work with new devices like the iPad.

With the nanoSERIES2, Korg mainly sticks with the original formula, but adds a few adjustments. They have the same housing, says Korg, and driver-free USB operation. So what’s new?

* nanoKEY2: A new keybed, “modeled after a MacBook.” So, it is still going to feel like a computer keyboard (a necessary evil given how thin it is), but at least it’ll feel like a better keyboard.
* nanoKEY2: Light-up octave shift.
* nanoPAD2: Record gestures on the X-Y pad.
* nanoPAD2: 16 pads instead of 12.
* nanoPAD2: Arpeggiator, chord triggers.
* nanoKONTROL2: 8 faders instead of 9, and a more logical control layout.
* nanoKONTROL2: Mackie HUI support.

I’m especially excited by the nanoPAD2, as it gets quite a significant improvement. All in all, these look subtly different but improved, particularly in moving the nanoKEY2 into the realm of actual usabilty. Pricing remains the same; stay tuned for these to ship.

nanoSERIES2

And yes, they’ll still be available in white, though now with a more subdued color scheme (none of the retro blue-and-white flair). See below…

Audio Damage Phosphor Now Available

Phosphor is a VSTi/AU instrument modeled on the alphaSyntauri, a vintage digital additive synth. The original alphaSyntauri required an Apple //e to operate, but we've gone ahead and eliminated the middle-man, and now you can have this classic digital synth in your DAW of choice.

Featuring two sixteen-partial additive oscillators, each with its own amp envelope, Phosphor's topology closely follows the alphaSyntauri, while adding many modern features such as full velocity control, a much more extensive modulation routing system, tempo synced LFOs, a pair of delays, and two monophonic modes. The noise and oscillators are able to work in the original alphaSyntauri resolutions, and can also be run at modern sample rates. All this results in a much more sophisticated and capable synth than the original, without compromising the ability to recreate the classic sounds of the early days of digital synthesis.
The OS X version of Phosphor requires OS X 10.5.1 or greater, and an Intel Macintosh. Phosphor Features:
• Two complete oscillator/envelope sections modeled on the original topology of the alphaSyntauri.

• Each set of partials can run in "lo-fi" mode, emulating the original, or in a modern mode for alias-free sines.

• The noise can be either "lo-fi" digital shift-register noise, or modern white noise.

• Two complete delay sections with LP/HP filtering and cross-feedback.

• Two tempo-syncable LFOs with multiple modulation destinations.

• 80 presets included that show off the extensive sound generating capabilities of Phosphor.

• Full MIDI Learn.

Sonic Reality Releases Infinite Workstation Gold Library For NI Kontakt Player

Sonic Reality sound development company is announcing the release of a powerful virtual instrument plug-in/Kontakt-based sample library bundle called “Infinite Workstation Gold”. It features a massive selection of multi-sampled instruments ranging from pianos, vintage keyboards, guitars and bass to a complete orchestra, vocal pads and world instruments. With 3,000 sounds and over 12 gigabytes of sample content “Infinite Workstation Gold” is designed with the songwriter/composer or producer in mind. It’s a ‘one-stop shop’ for all sound needs in any style of music from Hip Hop to Rock to Classical and more.

From over 15 years Sonic Reality has created many of the “workstation” sounds heard in software and hardware products such as IK Multimedia’s Sonik Synth, SampleTron, SampleMoog, SampleTank and Philharmonik, Propellerheads’ Reason and SR’s Sonic Refills, Steinberg’s Cubase and HALion One, Native Instruments’ Bandstand and Kontakt, Yamaha’s Motif, Roland’s JV and S Series, Clavia’s Wave, Alesis’s QS Series and many others. Now for the first time the best variety of “fully expanded” workstation sounds are available together as a bundle in NI’s Kontakt format. While it’s a sample library for Kontakt and Komplete users it also works as it’s own virtual instrument plug-in for ProTools, Cubase, Logic and other DAWS as well as stand alone for Mac and PC. This is because it comes with Sonic Reality’s “Infinite Player” license that allows the encrypted sounds of this collection to work inside NI’s FREE “Kontakt Player” which is also included in the bundle.

“While SR also creates multi-gigabyte collections focusing on a handful of deluxe individual instruments at a time for the high end sample users” says Sonic Reality CEO Dave Kerzner “we know that any composer also wants fast-loading sounds with a wide variety for quick flow of creativity and powerful sequencing. The Infinite Workstation covers that area really well.”

Sonic Reality has taken its legacy “Sonik Capsule” series and over the years has expanded the original 5 titles to 15 “Kapsules” for Kontakt format. The Infinite Workstation Gold is a bundle of all 15 Kapsule titles plus additional content such as large-sized “OmniSoundz” GM set, 300 meg grand piano and bonus sounds from other “Kontakt/Infinite Player Family” sound collections by Sonic Reality.

The Social Network Wins Golden Globe for Best Original Score

It is not every day a movie gets an electronic music score. It is even rarer they get any recognition at all. This year, the Golden Globe award for Best Original Score goes to two electro-knob twiddlers who composed the score to David Fincher's movie about Facebook called "The Social Network." Which also won the Golden Globe award for best movie. I could not be happier to see Trent Reznor and Artticus Ross win the award. Reznor was so surprised, he tweeted "holy shit!" Indeed Trent! Join us in congratulating them both in this victory for synth geeks everywhere!

15 Days Left To Get The Hollow Sun Polivoks Library For $1!

Here’s a little heads-up and a mini review for the Hollow Sun Polivoks library.

So, I’ve heard some stories about the Polivoks before and after watching several Youtube clips and hearing various audio demos, I really became interested in this old Soviet synth. What really caught my attention while listening to the Polivoks demos was its angry sounding analog filter.

Meh, angry doesn’t describe it well enough though… that thing is vicious, it growls like crazy, and since I’m still feeling that my descriptions are lacking, you should really check out the demo video below to get a better idea.

And yeah, I’m also a bit of a vintage Soviet analog gear fanboy, which only helped getting me hooked to the idea of adding the Polivoks to my sound arsenal somehow.

Anyway, along came the $1 Polivoks deal from Hollow Sun and boy was I happy once I finally got these samples. The Polivoks programing part was done exceptionally well, the sounds are inspiring and capture exactly that wild character I was looking for. The samples are not over-processed and deliver the raw nature of Polivoks perfectly and the included Kontakt patches are great fun to play with. But what’s most important for me is that individual WAV files are also available and ready for all sorts of further processing and editing. Hooray!

So yeah, I’m pretty sure there’s not much chance that I’ll ever own a real Polivoks, but this Hollow Sun library will work great as a substitute. If you too are a fan of old Soviet gear, rare analog synths, or just generally need new synth sounds for your sample library, then this $1 deal is more than worth checking out.

How to make Trance Arpeggio Melody Part 1

Again Ableton Live and trance tutorial. Sorry for that ;) The video is about creating typical uplifting trance melody which means picking chord and building manual arpeggio around it.

Sidechaining Gate effect is an easy way to get nice rhythmic cuts based on the other elements in your track. Great video - quick, easy to understand and actually very helpful (especially that trick with using Return channel as sidechain source). You can find more tutorials at thedspproject.com

Ableton Live Sound Quality

Does Ableton Live offer highest possible sound quality on default ? Nope. Settings are suited better for live performance rather than studio usage. Presented video (again by Certified Ableton Trainer - DJ Vespers) shows a few helpful tricks about setting highest possible sound quality.

How to Write Hip Hop Beats in Ableton Live

Almost 40 minutes video tutorial, made by DJ Vespers, which shows how to create Hip Hop (or Glitch) beats using Ableton Live (and some third party plugins). At the beginning of the first part, you can hear the final result so it's up to you to decide whether this video is useful for you or not. I believe the video is very nice :)

GET STUDIO ONE ARTIST FOR 20 BUCKS!!

If you’re looking for a new DAW, this is certainly an offer worth considering. The download version of Studio One Artist edition by Presonus will be available for $20 between January 13th and January 16th, in celebration of the 2011 NAMM show.

Once acquired, the Artist edition of Studio One could be upgraded to Pro at any time, for a price of $199. So basically, if you invest $20 now, you’ll be able to get Studio One Pro later for a total price of $220, which is roughly 60% of the regular price.

The only big BUT you should be aware of is the fact that the Artist edition doesn’t support 3rd party VST plugins. If you enjoy working with your own set of software synths and effects, this fact makes the offer far less attractive. However, Studio One comes bundled with a great suite of native plugins, including twenty effects, two samplers, and a simple mono synthesizer. These tools packed into a capable DAW such as Studio One are certainly worth the $20 investment, and make this offer a rather tempting one for me… even though I won’t be able to use some of my favorite freebie VSTs inside it.

So yeah, you’ve been informed, get more info here if you’re interested.
Features

Main features of Studio One Artist:

* Elegant single-window work environment
* Powerful drag-and-drop functionality
